While we can’t actually begin writing our novel until November 1st, we can prepare our brains for lots ofthinking before then. Here we’ll use gaming theory to have fun sparking ideas for our Nano novel.

Example Syllabus:

Pin the Tail on the Tagline–Nano novels often start with the germ of an idea. No idea what you will write forNanowrimo? No worries! We will look at taglines, and play with ideas for our own. No stress here. We are simplythrowing potential story ideas in your idea bucket and see what happens.

Tarot Card our Characters–Sometimes we get stuck in our writing and look for inspiration in other areas. I andother writers often use Tarot cards to help jar our muse into high gear again. The real Tarot magic happens inour mind. No previous knowledge of Tarot required as this is a “for fun” exercise that can be used in all areas ofyour writing if you wish.

Clue Foreshadowing Details–Mr. Mustard with the candlestick in the conservatory. Well, not exactly what youmight write but we can use the game of Clue to gain clues into our story’s foreshadowing possible details to theplot.

Bridge our Hook–the card game of Bridge is about partnerships and trumping other players. Here we’ll partnerup to brainstorm potential story “hooks” to draw our reader in that will touch on potential story themes for yournovel. There are no bad ideas!

Crazy 8 Plot Points–There are as many ways to plot a book as there are games to play instead of writing. We’lllook at several popular methods of plotting and lay them out to help you outline ideas for your Nano novel.

Cribbage Scenes–Cribbage uses pegs on a board. The peg steps, sometimes hopping over others, to the end. Here we will attempt to cribbage, or line up some potential scene ideas for your story.

Yahtzee! our Climax–Yahtzee! is a fun game. The is purpose is to gain points by rolling dice combinations for thehighest points. We will roll the dice for potential endings to our stories. Each climax will be numbered and thedice roll will determine your ending. Don’t like that ending? Try for another! Our goal is to get our muse sparkedto Nano with you and have some fun doing it.

She’s running from the darkness. But what lurks inside her is darker.

The debut novel from award-winning author Pat Hauldren explores questions of who we think we are vs the truth of who we are, and the price we pay no matter the path taken.

Life is not simple for Zarachiel, freshly escaped from her drug-dealing foster parents in deep South Texas. In Dallas, she stays off the grid. She finds a new family in Gracie, from whom she leases an extra bedroom, and Katie, Gracie’s four-year-old daughter.

The cartel attacks just as Zarachiel makes contact with her biological father. They want what she stole from them.

Amid chaos and survival for both her and her new family, Zarachiel discovers her true nonhuman self as she fights for her freedom and the freedom of humanity.
