The Downing 11/25

The Downing by Pat Hauldren

I don’t write much about my next novel/WIP, The Downing. Because, well, it isn’t written yet. Some is, very rough, and the basic outline is up on my whiteboard. Other than that, not much.

I’m great at hopping around projects. Very scatterbrained. But that’s how I got to lots of stories started and none finished. So last year my “word for the year” was/is FOCUS—focus on my current WIP (The Angel Project) and put those blinders on and keep on truckin’.

It’s hard, oh so very hard, not to hop around on my stories. That’s why I have some preview pages on my website about the ones I’ll be working on next. Mostly the order I’ll be working on them. Things can change.

The Downing. That will be my 2nd novel and my 1st sci-fi. I can’t wait to jump into it! It’s at the edges of my writing brain going “write me!” like the huge weed in Little Shop of Horrors saying, “Feed me Seymour!”.

There will be spaceships, abducted female archeologist who becomes a protag, rogue spaceship captain (think Hans Solo) who becomes a hero, aliens and one who becomes a giant antagonist, minor minion antagonists, lotsa government interference and secrets and mysteries they’d rather were kept silent, lotsa chasing around the universe, just a lot of fun stuff.

As I get closer to completing the urban fantasy The Angel Project (TAP), I’ll be turning more to The Downing while TAP is in beta reads. Stay tuned!

In this workshop, we’ll explore how to identify, adapt, and elevate classic genre tropes to create fiction that keeps readers hungry for more.

She’s running from the darkness. But what lurks inside her is darker.

The debut novel from award-winning author Pat Hauldren explores questions of who we think we are vs the truth of who we are, and the price we pay no matter the path taken.

Life is not simple for Zarachiel, freshly escaped from her drug-dealing foster parents in deep South Texas. In Dallas, she stays off the grid. She finds a new family in Gracie, from whom she leases an extra bedroom, and Katie, Gracie’s four-year-old daughter.

The cartel attacks just as Zarachiel makes contact with her biological father. They want what she stole from them.

Amid chaos and survival for both her and her new family, Zarachiel discovers her true nonhuman self as she fights for her freedom and the freedom of humanity.
